Have you ever heard anyone from Canada say “God Bless Canada”, or anyone from Mexico say “God Bless Mexico”? We Americans do seem to have a unique expectation and a hope that God will bless our country.

The phrase “God Bless America” has become part of our national culture and identity. But what does “God Bless America” really mean? Is it a statement of expectation? Is it a plea? Does it mean that whatever we ask for, or do, is right as long as we tack on the words “God Bless America”?

If we ask, or expect, God to bless America, maybe we first need to ask ourselves some questions. Does God WANT to bless America? Under what circumstances WOULD God bless America?

In the coming weeks and months, you’re going to be hearing a series of stories about how God has, indeed, blessed our nation. We’ll explore the common threads between those blessings and learn more about how and why God extends his blessings to a nation.
